Second seed Patty Schnyder booked her spot in the quarter-finals with a straight set victory over Russia's Vera Dushevina at the WTA Amelia Island Tournament.
The 27-year-old Swiss, who is ranked No 9 in the world, swept past Dushevina 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday at the first clay court event of the 2006 season.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, Francesca Schiavone and Anna-Lena Groenefeld were other top seeds to make it through the third round while fourth seeded Nicole Vaidisova was upset.
Schnyder, who is seeking her first victory of the season, moves on to the round of eight where she will face Kuznetsova who cruised past Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-4.
Schnyder and fifth seeded Kuznetsova have split their four previous meetings.
Third seed Schiavone overpowered Italian compatriot Maria Elena Camerin 6-1, 6-3.
Vaidisova fell to 15th seeded Lucie Safarova, of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Safarova will meet unseeded American Jill Craybas, who cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over German Julia Schruff.
Safarova's victory was the only major upset as five of the top seven players advanced.
Top-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over unseeded American Meghann Shaughnessy.
She will face Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain, who defeated Russian Elena Vesnina, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Schiavone will meet seventh-seeded German Groenefeld, who defeated ninth-seeded Russian Dinara Safina, 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3.
