Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) Chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim has said that MMA has proposed for repealing the 17th Amendment and this task will be accomplished as soon as the opposition parties get majority in the Parliament.
"Our struggle for the restoration of democracy will continue and now chapter of negotiations with the military leadership for sake of power is closed forever," he said while addressing a news conference at ARD deputy secretary information Munir Ahmed Khan's residence here on Sunday.
Aziz ur Rehman Chann, Nafees Siddiqui and Zakariya Butt were also present on the occasion.
The ARD chief said that Dr Sher Afgan's statements were not credible and his point of view over the issue of general election had no weight. There were differences between the government circles over the holding of general elections and even the rulers were not clear about the election schedule, he added.
He maintained that one group of the ruling party said elections would be held in 2006 while the other had declared 2007 as the year for the general elections.
Similarly, one group says that the existing assemblies would elect Musharraf as president for the next five years, while according to another group the new assemblies would elect him as president for the next term.
He said: "MMA Secretary General Maulana Fazl ur Rehman has proposed for repealing the 17th Amendment but I have told him it is impossible unless we have majority in the parliament. However, as soon as we get majority in the parliament we will do this."
To a question, he said not only the chief election commissioner but the provincial election commissioners should also be impartial personalities.
The ARD chief further said that it was unfortunate that majority of politicians always welcomed the military take-over, "but I say it is also the collective duty of politicians to eliminate the role of military from the country's politics."
