The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal on Wednesday condemned the Nishtar Park bombing in the strongest terms and demanded of the Governor Sindh and Home Minister to accept the responsibility and resign from their offices. The religio-political alliance announced to observe countrywide protest on Friday to condemn the loss of 60 faithful people.
The decision was taken during the MMA supreme council meeting held here with Qazi Hussain Ahmed in the chair. Briefing the newsmen, MMA general secretary Maulana Fazlur Rehman said they condemned the killing of innocent people who lost their lives while attending a religious congregation.
The shocking incident is result of Sindh government's failure to maintain law and order in the province, he said. "The incident has contradicted the tall claims of satisfactory law and order situation in the province. Therefore, the governor and home minister Sindh should accept the responsibility and tender their resignations," Fazl asked.
He said the opposition parties were coming closer to launch a decisive drive against dictatorial rule in the country from one platform.
"We have agreed upon important issues including resignation of President Musharraf and establishment of an independent election commission under an interim setup," he added.
He informed the newsmen that the MMA supreme council has decided to call National Consultative Conference (NCC) of all the opposition parties on April 30 to develop a joint strategy against the government.
The opposition leader in the National Assembly said the religio-political alliance was the second largest group in the Upper House, therefore, one of its senators should be nominated as opposition leader in the Senate.
Maulana said the move would not affect the understanding developed among the opposition parties. Being the second largest party after ruling coalition it was their constitutional right to have nominated for the top slot in the Senate.
Speaking about the deaths of more than two dozen women and innocent children in Karachi, the MMA Secretary General alleged the stampede at the congregation of Dawat-i-Islami was a planned conspiracy.
Fazlur Rehman said they would strongly oppose Afghanistan-India trade via Pakistan and added that the issue must be debated in the parliament to evolve a comprehensive policy in this regard.
The meeting also expressed serious concerns over the volatile law and order situation in Fata and along western borders. The religio-political alliance asked the government to end military operation in these areas.
Expressing concern over the ongoing peace process between India and Pakistan, the alliance said one-sided confidence building measures were being taken that have helped India to increase its influence on country's western borders.
The supreme council will now meet in Peshawar to take briefing from the NWFP Chief Minister and his cabinet on their performance.
