The Standing Committee on Education has urged the government to ensure international educational standards and Islamic values in the new educational curriculum.
The committee met here on Thursday with its Chairperson Begum Tehmina Dasti in the chair at the Parliament House to discuss the policy regarding changes in the curriculum.
Federal Education Minister Lieutenant General Javed Ashraf Qazi (Retd) briefed the committee about the rationale behind bringing changes in the curriculum of various classes.
He said that revision had become necessary to make the curriculum more vibrant and responsive to the modern socio-economic, professional and market-oriented needs.
He said that according to the new curriculum policy sports have become compulsory. Qazi also said that efforts were being made to increase salaries and other incentives of the teachers to attract professional manpower in the field.
The members emphasised that the committee should be taken into confidence before introducing new policies or bringing changes in the syllabus for various classes. The committee directed the ministry to introduce job-training skills at the school level.
Begum Tehmina said that the education system is major thrust area, which needs all-out efforts not only to enhance the literacy rate, but also quality of education to meet the international standards. She emphasised upon the need to introduce moral and ethical aspects in the syllabi in order to build proper character of the new generation.
MNAs Begum Zeb Gohar Ayub, Mohammad Akhtar Khan Kanju, Professor Asiya Azeem, Haji Khuda Bux Nizamani, Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Maulana Syed Nek Zaman, Aisha Munawar, Dr Farida Ahmad, Nafisa Munawar Raja, Shakeela Khanum Rashid and Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho attended the meeting.
