An awareness raising workshop for parliamentarians on 'Gender responsive budgeting initiative (GRBI)' will he organised by Finance department at a local hotel on Friday.
Provincial Finance Minister, Hasnain Bahadur Dareshak will be the chief guest on this occasion, and Ms Deborah Jean Budlender, International Consultant will be the key resource person.
According to Punjab Finance Department officials more than 45 parliamentarians will attend the workshop organised under a project financed by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Since the launch of this concept at the international level in 1984, GRBIs have so far been introduced in over 40 countries, including Pakistan, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, India and Tanzania.
The idea of gender responsive budgets gathered momentum when the United Nations' Beijing Platform for Action in 1995 called for the integration of a gender perspective into budgetary decision making.
In Pakistan, gender budgeting was proposed for the first time in 2001 by the Ministry of Women Development in a paper on 'Gender and Poverty' submitted for the Poverty Reduction Growth Facility.
