Pakistan and South Africa have reiterated desire to increase and expand bilateral co-operation between the two countries in the field of defence.
These views were expressed during a meeting held here on Monday between Senior Federal Minister and Minister for Defence, Rao Sikandar Iqbal, and the visiting South African Deputy Defence Minister, M. George.
Both the leaders emphasised the need for promoting greater collaboration in the field of defence. Both the countries also agreed to enhance co-operation in the area of training for the mutual benefits of the two countries.
Rao Sikandar briefed the visiting dignitary about the capability and potential of the Defence Industry of Pakistan. George praised the quality and potential of the defence equipment produced by Pakistan.
Apart from the Minister, South African Ambassador to Pakistan and the Senior officials of Ministry of Defence also attended the meeting.
Earlier, the South African Deputy Defence Minister called on Federal Minister for Defence Production, Habibullah Warriach, and discussed with him matters of mutual interests.
The meeting underscored the need for promoting co-operation in the area of defence production. The meeting recommended the exchange of visits by the defence delegations of the two countries so as to benefit from each other's experiences.
Secretary Defence Production, Lieutenant General Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai (Retd) highlighted the quality and capability of the defence equipment produced by Pakistan. He referred to the indigenously built Al-Khalid Tank, Frigates and the JF-17 Thunder Aircraft which were being developed with the Chinese assistance.
The meeting discussed the possibility of undertaking a joint venture in the area of defence production and research and development. George thanked the minister for extending warm welcome and hospitality to him and members of his delegation.
