Richard Boucher, assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, on Friday said the United States and Pakistan have "broad interests."
These include interests in "the strategic, educational and economic" areas, he said, adding that the United States supports "the overall strategic goals set by President Musharraf."
In an interview with a Karachi English daily, Boucher described President Musharraf's policy of "enlightened moderation" as "fundamental" to US policy towards the region.
"These were the kind of things that the US wanted to support and as President Musharraf achieves those objectives, Pakistan's role in the region and its own development prospers."
He said part of the US goal for Pakistan was to support the modern education system, create economic opportunities for the Pakistani nation and for individuals and to support the program President Musharraf has laid down for free and fair elections next year.
