A group of 17 participants of training course, "Labour Intensive Youth Employment Programme", of Saarc countries headed by Saarc Director (Human Resource Development Centre) Dr Muhammad Aslam Khan on Monday visited Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI).
On this occasion, SCCI Acting President Faisal Mehmood Khan briefed the visitors about the unique export culture of Sialkot, which is the hub of cottage industry and only export-oriented city of Pakistan.
He said that Sialkot-based small and medium industries are earning foreign exchange to the tune of $800 million annually. In the present global scenario and introduction of the concept of global village, strengthening of economic and commercial relations between various countries had gained more importance, he said.
Faisal Mehmood Khan called upon the visitors to mediate between business community of their countries and the exporters of Sialkot for bringing them close that would definitely create positive opportunities and open areas of co-operation for mutual benefits and gains in commercial terms.
The International Quality Standards had become most important factor in exporting to western countries and maintaining market share in these countries, he said.
He said Sialkot has 40 percent share of the total ISO-9000 certified companies in the country, while local companies had also qualifies environmental and social standards to maintain their top position in international market.
Speaking on the occasion Saarc Director (HRDC) Dr Muhammad Aslam Khan said that Sialkot is an ancient city known for its unique export culture, industrial set-up and skilled labour as well as rendering highly laudable service for strengthening the national exchequer.
The city had earned the name globally for its quality production dexterity as well as for producing value-added products, which were being exported to various countries of the world, he added.
Later, talking to Business Recorder, Dr Muhammad Aslam Khan said that print and electronic media could play an instrumental role in brining the people especially the businessmen of Saarc countries closer and develop understanding among the peoples of member countries. The role of media could not be ignored in strengthening the ties between the members countries and better understanding for making Saarc more stronger he added.
