Pakistan on Saturday successfully test-fired Hatf-VI (Shaheen II) ballistic missile. This hi-tech surface to surface missile, having range of 2000 kilometres, is capable of carrying all sorts of warheads and can be equipped with the nuclear as well as conventional weapons for hitting right at the eye of the target most accurately.
The test was conducted to validate additional technical parameters beyond those that were verified in the last test-fire in March 2005. It may be recalled that Hatf VI (Shaheen-II) is the country's longest range ballistic missile system and has the potential to achieve 2500 kilometres range in an advanced version.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, who watched the successful test, congratulated the engineers, scientists and technical staff on the occasion.
In his brief address, he said that Pakistan would retain a trustworthy minimum deterrent capability for peace in the region. Shaukat Aziz added that the defence of the country was topmost priority, fully endorsed by the entire nation.
He vowed that Pakistan would continue to modernise its defence in line with the changes taking place in the region, adding Pakistan would not accept any discriminatory attitude and treatment in this regard.
Shaukat Aziz said that Pakistan would keep trying to meet its security and energy requirements, including the nuclear ones, from all sources.
