The United Nations should get a fund of $500 million to enable it to respond immediately in case of any crisis. This was stated by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz while speaking as chief guest at the launching of a study "Corporate philanthropy in Pakistan: The case of public listed companies."
The ceremony was held at the lawns of Governor House here on Saturday night.
The Prime Minister was of the view that United Nations should get a fund of $500 million so that if a crisis happens it moves and acts and does not have to worry about how it will pay for the helicopter flight to a particular area.
"Natural disasters don't give any warnings. If the UN does not have at least a kitty of half a billion (dollars) how they can act", he remarked, adding: "so what happened if they were spending more time raising money sometime than helping the victims."
Shaukat Aziz hoped that this funding effort which we are supporting and so many other countries too are, will no longer require people diverting their time at a critical period. Whether it is tsunami, flood or earthquake the world must have the capacity to act and react globally at a short notice. He recalled that in the wake of the devastating earthquake of October 8 last year we had to go and attend a UN effort in Geneva- a flash appeal meeting to raise money for the earthquake victims.
The Prime Minister said now Pakistan is a big proponent that when a crisis happens and people are dying that is not the time to go around the world raising money.
