Oil futures on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) gained on Monday amid higher international crude prices in relatively heavy trading despite the partial Golden Week holidays.
November gasoline added 1,440 yen to 67,720 yen per kilolitre (yen/kl).
All gasoline and kerosene contracts rose. September crude added 910 yen to 48,940 yen per kilolitre.
US crude oil futures were trading 90 cents up at $72.78 a barrel as of 0904 GMT.
Oil rallied above $72 a barrel on Monday, extending a rebound towards record highs as Iran maintained a defiant stance in the face of possible UN sanctions and militants in Nigeria whose attacks have cut oil exports by a quarter detonated a car bomb near a refinery.
Japan's nine days of Golden Week holidays officially started on Saturday, although markets remain open Monday and Tuesday.
All Japanese markets will be closed from Wednesday through Friday.
