Chairman Election Co-ordination Committee of Pakistan Muslim League, Kamal Ali Agha on Friday announced the schedule for party elections which would be completed by August 12 with the election of the party president.
Addressing a press conference here at PML house along with Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azim Khan, Senator Kamil Ali Agha said the elections would be held in a fair, free and impartial manner.
Giving details of the election schedule, Agha said, the party elections would be completed in four phases starting from elections of primary units to central president.
He said the enrolment, primary units, union council and provincial constituency or city league elections would be completed by June 15.
It will be followed by elections of District Muslim League by July 1, provincial organisations of PML by July 25 and elections of President PML will be held on August 12 here at PML House.
Kamil Ali Agha who is chairman of election co-ordination Committee of PML election will conduct the election along with four other members of the Committee including Iqbal Dar, Mrs Yaqoot Jamil ur Rehman, Mushtaq Ghani and Senator Abdul Ghafaar Qureshi.
Referring to the process of elections in PML, Kamil Ali Agha said it was the credit of this party that it has been conducting party elections regularly and held four elections in the last six years.
He said the last elections were held on May 12, in 2004 for three years, but President PML Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain decided to hold party elections one year earlier.
The next elections will be for a three-year term and every member of PML would be free to contest the elections for any office, he added.
Replying to a question, he said, the elections will be held according to the party constitution and if there will be more than one candidate for any seat, polling will be held through secret ballot.
He referred the example of secret ballot election of the party previously when Mian Muhammad Azhar was elected President PML.
Kamil Ali Agha said all provincial organisations of the party have been asked to appoint provincial election authorities to ensure fair, free and impartial elections.
Replying to a question about selection of candidate for party presidentship, Kamal said usually some elders of the party decide in favour of a candidate unanimously and it is a practice in all political parties. He however said unlike other political parties where some of the chairperson or presidents are for life the PML has been electing its office bearers regularly through elections.
Answering a question, he said new list of general council will be prepared after the primary and provincial elections and only members of the general council could contest elections at center.
He said Pir Pagara is not the member of general council of PML.
Replying to a question about any restriction on Chief Ministers to contest the party office elections, Kamal Ali Agha said there is no such restriction in the party's constitution. He said the present general council of the party would continue till the election of the new council.
