Pakistan Ambassador Jehangir Karamat on Saturday said Henry Crumpton, State Department Co-ordinator for Counter terrorism, "has been appreciative" of Pakistan's efforts in the war against terrorism, and he had recently said that "Pakistan was doing a lot."
He was asked to comment on a news report circulated by an international wire service from Kabul.
The report quoted ambassador Crumpton, now in Kabul, having said "that Pakistan is not doing enough to help root out Taleban and al Qaeda leaders who have found safe haven in its lawless tribal lands along the Afghan border."
Karamat told newsmen that recently, Foreign Secretary Riaz Muhammad Khan visited United States; and Defence Secretary visited Washington, and before Crumpton left for Kabul, Lieutenant General Tariq Waseem Ghazi (Retd), who led Pakistan delegation at the 17th Pakistan-US Defence Consultative Group (DCG), "had held a detailed discussion with him."
I think, there may be misreporting, because Crumpton had, in fact, appreciated Pakistan's efforts in the war against terrorism and, he had specifically said that Pakistan was doing a lot."
"So, I am not sure in what context the statement has been made; but, generally, my personal impression is that there is great appreciation of Pakistan's role in the war against terror; and there is a satisfaction that Pakistan is doing everything possible to create a stable environment in Afghanistan."
The Pakistan ambassador to the United States said "there are, of course, many other reasons like drugs, weapons, instability of the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan but, otherwise, we are leaving no stone unturned to bring those areas under control to prevent any cross border movement, which can contribute to the situation in Afghanistan, and to support all the efforts that are being made to stabilise Afghanistan."
