The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted leave to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to appeal against the Lahore High Court (LHC) acquittal of Anwar Saifullah, a former minister.
NAB arrested Anwar Saifullah in 2000 on charges of unlawfully recruiting 145 employees in the Oil and Gas Development Corporation while was minister in the 1993-96 cabinet of then Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
Subsequently, the Accountability Court in Lahore sentenced him to one-year imprisonment and fined him Rs five million, but the LHC accepted his appeal and acquitted him. A three-member SC bench issued bailable warrants against Anwar Saifullah through the District Police Officer (DPO) Lucky Marwat against Rs 50,000 surety bond for ensuring his presence.
