Punjab Governor Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd) has stressed the need for ensuring quality education, which is inevitable for the development of national economy.
While addressing the inaugural session of two-day workshop on Universities' Self Assessment, organised by Quality Assurance Agency of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), here on Wednesday, the governor emphasised the need for promotion of quality education which could help Pakistan to become a developed nation. "Pakistan can not live in isolation in the world and would have to play its role in view of its strategic position," he said.
He further said that the country would have to adopt the standards being followed by other countries in the world to ensure basic rights to women and minorities.
He maintained that Pakistan would have to face hardships if it does not ensure quality in higher education. "We should make quality assurance as necessary part in our culture to get rid of socio-economic problems," he added.
Meanwhile talking to newsmen, Khalid Maqbool appreciated the measures taken by HEC for promotion of higher education in the country. The steps taken by HEC for conducting refresher courses for teachers, launching of PhD programmes, hiring of foreign faculty and making arrangements for video-conferences are commendable, he added. He was of the view that establishment of digital-libraries and upgradation of laboratories would play vital role in improving quality education in the country.
Earlier, Professor Dr Abdul Rauf and Professor Dr Riaz Hussain Qureshi gave presentations on Universities Self-Assessment, which was attended by teachers and students of various universities and educational institutions.
