Speakers at a meeting of Shura Hamdard, Karachi chapter, have expressed grave concern over the deteriorating situation of law and order in the country, and urged the government to start strict accountability process and implement rule of law for creating national harmony.
The meeting was held here on Thursday on the topic of "Internal law and order situation and national harmony, the foundation stones of national security", which was presided over by former Sindh Ombudsman, Justice Haziqul Khairi (Retd). Hamdard Foundation, Pakistan, and Shura Hamdard, Pakistan, President Sadia Rashid was also present on occasion.
Speaking at the occasion, Major General Ghulam Umar (Retd) said that all administrative divisions of the country should be made provinces with financial, administrative and political powers, while minimum important subjects be kept with Central government.
He was of the view that more provinces in the county would be helpful in restoring the law and order and mutual understanding and harmony among the people. It would also create opportunities for the people to solve their internal problems by themselves, he added.
Justice Haziqul Khairi (Retd) said that it was wrong to say that Pakistan was a disturbed and failed state.
The whole Pakistani nation was united at the time of October 8 earthquake to support the victims of earthquake, he said, adding children, youths, elders and even women rose to help their brothers and sisters, who were in great trouble and in need of help and assistance.
He said the demonstration of such passion, emotions and sentiments was seen only at the time of 1965 war when no crime case was registered in the country.
Qutubuddin Aziz, a former diplomat, said that Pakistan had recently secured 149 votes out of 189 votes to become member of the United Nations Council for Human Rights. Pakistan enjoyed the status of a respectable nation of international comity, he maintained, and suggested that a national conference to prepare an action plan for the promotion of national unity and harmony be called immediately.
Burhanuddin Hasan, former PTV director, highlighted the causes of violence in the country, and said it was sectarian differences that were pushing us towards a terrible situation.
He stressed the need for understanding the teachings of Holy Quran to resolve issues like rampant accumulation of wealth, lawlessness, lack of literacy and national harmony.-PR
