As the mystery shrouds the death of a Pakistani student in a German prison, the Senate panel will meet next week to discuss the issue. Taking suo moto notice of the death of Aamir Cheema, Chairman Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights, S.M. Zafar has summoned the panel meeting on May 25.
Cheema mysteriously died in a Berlin prison while facing a trial for allegedly trying to attack an editor over publication of sacrilegious caricatures. The German government says that the deceased had committed suicide.
However, his family still believes that Cheema was tortured to death by German authorities, provoking public sentiments in Pakistan.
According to a statement issued by the Senate Secretariat, the functional committee meeting has been convened next week. However, it has not been mentioned whether the federal investigation agency (FIA) which also probed the killing of Aamir Cheema in Berlin would share its finding report with the committee members or not.
Despite several attempts by Business Recorder, Senator S.M. Zafar was not available to elaborate the agenda of the meeting. The functional committee on human rights has adopted a strategy to counter human rights violations in the country and also respond to such violations at the international level.
Major political parties, especially the religio-political alliance has taken the government to task for not lodging a strong protest with the German government over the killing of Cheema and called for severing diplomatic ties with Berlin. According to further details, the committee will also discuss the issue of "Vani".
