Neelam Ladhani, who converted to Islam on April 10, 2006 from Hindusim and three days later the court married her lover Amjad Shehzad on April 13 in Karachi, appeared before the Supreme Court here on Tuesday and submitted that she wanted to live with her husband and in-laws.
Through an application, the couple had sought protection of the court as Neelam's father Misri Ladhani, additional commissioner, Income Tax, Clifton, had lodged a report of his daughter's abduction with a police station.
The couple's counsel Latif Khosa assured the court that Neelam's rich in-laws can provide financial and physical security to their daughter in-law and since she has become a Muslim, therefore, she has now no relation with her Hindu parents.
However, Misri Ladhani argued that her only daughter has been abducted for money sake and the accused had demanded Rs 2.5 million for her return. Neelam refuted her father's statement in the court.
The court asked Amjad's father Abdul Sattar who was present in the court whether he could provide a bank guarantee of Rs 5 million in order to ensure future financial security of Neelam since he had claimed to be a propertied man. Sattar said that he was ready to transfer a portion of his property in Neelam's name but was unable to provide bank guarantee of Rs 5 million.
Since the court time was over, the Chief Justice adjourned the case till Thursday and sent Neelam to a Women Centre in Islamabad and Amjad to a Police Academy with the direction that the two should be provided full protection.
The court directed parents of the couple to try to solve this problem out of the court on humanitarian grounds amicably so that they could live a problem-free and happy life.
