Multan Food Department has procured 553,991 tons of wheat, achieving 88.29 percent of the target, which has been further raised from 580,000 tons to 627,500 tons.
Deputy Director Manzoor Bajwa told newsmen here on Tuesday that so far 5.741 million empty gunny bags had been issued to wheat growers against Rs 50 per bag security, which would be refunded when the grain was brought to the procurement centres.
A total of 106,662 tons of wheat has been procured in Multan district against a target of 118,000 tons; Khanewal district: 121,065 tons (target 132,000 tons); Lodhran: 58,611 tons (target 69,000 tons); Vehari: 112,611 tons (target 123,500 tons); Pakpattan: 47,245 tons (target 50,000 tons); and Sahiwal: 107,797 tons (target 116,000 tons).
Bajwa said the target might be revised further by the provincial government to safeguard the interests of the farmers' community.
