Fire broke out in one of Karachi Electric Supply Corporation's (KESC) 11-KV Grid Stations on Wednesday morning due to overload, leaving quarter of the metropolis without electricity.
At 9:30 am the Grid Station located at Mai Kolachi Road caught fire which resulted in burning of 22 underground power cables that feed electricity to large area of the city.
The affected localities included I. I. Chundrigar Road, Keamari, Clifton, Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Gizri, Saddar, Kharadar, Queens Road, Elander Road and adjoining areas.
Fire tenders of different departments reached the site and started the extinguishing process that lasted over an hour.
KESC spokesman told Business Recorder that the fire broke out due to over load and ultimately a large area faced power outage. The power utility back-feed power to 11 underground cables supplying electricity to Clifton, Gizri, Old City and Elander Road in the afternoon, the spokesman added.
KESC has called almost its entire repair team to overcome the problem, he said, adding that it is expected that till midnight the repair work would be completed and 11 cables fully energised.
Earlier, at about noon, Landhi-Gulshan-e-Iqbal circuit went-off near Quaidabad, when out-conductor malfunctioned leaving the eastern part of city without electricity. Also people spent sleepless night on Tuesday due to a major power breakdown that hit Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Landhi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and adjoining areas.
