The Ministry of Education has asked the government for at least Rs five billion allocation for the President Education Sector Reform (PESR) in the next fiscal budget, Business Recorder learnt on Thursday.
Well-placed sources said that a comprehensive plan had been prepared for the next year to improve the missing facilities in the schools of rural areas. The major thrust would be use of the allocated money to establish science and computer labs in far flung areas' schools and provide missing facilities, they added.
We will have complete statistics about the schools, teachers and students available in the ministry with the completion of National Education Census (NEC) by June 2006, which would help us in selecting schools for setting up labs.
The Education Sector Reform (ESR) was renamed as PESR recently and decided that money allocated would be used in establishing primary schools, rehabilitation of the old buildings and provision of water, electricity and sanitation facilities, he added.
Project Manager Units (PMUs) would also be established to ensure smooth transfer of funds and their timely distribution besides developing a co-ordination among the district and provincial planner. District members would also be provided capacity building, essential training, which remained a major hindrance in full utilisation of the allocated budget.
The government is optimistic that these measures would help in ensuring computer and lab facilities in far-flung schools.
It is to be mentioned that Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli, who in a recent cabinet reshuffling, was given the portfolio of State Minister for Education had been assigned the job to monitor the President Education Sector Reform.
