District Nazim Amer Mahmood has directed the authorities concerned to ensure smooth supply of clean drinking water to the people during the summer season and also redress public complaints regarding contamination in water.
He issued these directions while chairing a meeting held to review water supply arrangements in the city on Wednesday. He directed the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) authorities to start sampling of water from Thursday to check public complaints pertaining to contaminated water supply. Wasa must carry out the sampling exercise in co-ordination with UC Nazims of the respective areas, he added.
The meeting decided that as many as 60 samples should be collected every day from different areas falling within the jurisdiction of City District Government Lahore (CDGL). If the laboratory declares some sample unfit for human consumption, the fault line should be identified and rectified accordingly, he added.
Amer also directed that Wasa should forthwith initiate chlorination of water at source, adding the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and the CDGL should appoint teams to monitor the process of chlorination.
At present 350 tube-wells are working at Wasa network, which should be ensured that each and every tube-well is being visited and monitored properly and reports to this effect shall be submitted to Zila Nazim/ LDA Chairman on daily basis.
The CDGL Health Department has been asked to prepare a schedule for the massive distribution of ORS/Nimkol and ensure that it is being distributed to all and sundry.
The CDGL Food Department shall also launch a comprehensive campaign to check that proper standards of cleanliness are being ensured at all food spots especially at the points, where milk-shake, fruit juices, sugarcane juice, milk/yogurt, beverages, etc are being sold.
Amer stressed the need for regular patrolling of water supply system by the field staff to identify any leakage, which may cause contamination in water supply.
Lahore District Co-ordination Officer Mian Muhammad Ejaz, LDA Director General Raja Muhammad Abbas, Lahore Wasa Managing Director Anam Qadir, Wasa DMD (Operations) Parvez Iftikhar, DGB Town Nazim Tariq Sana Bajwa and others attended the meeting.
