Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European stocks ended a volatile week on a positive note, rising more than one percent after data showing contained US inflation soothed interest rate fears, while a rebound in metal prices helped battered miners.
Steelmakers were again in focus after Arcelor said it planned to buy Russia's Severstal. Arcelor fell 3 percent as traders said the deal was likely to thwart a hostile take-over bid for Arcelor from global sector leader Mittal Steel, but other steel stocks such as ThyssenKrupp and Corus jumped.
The FTSEurofirst 300 index closed up 1.84 percent at 1,324.24 points, on healthy turnover of around 3 billion shares.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 5788.36 points, up 82.3 or 1.44 percent, and 116.08 points up on the week.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5045.09 points, up 95.56 or 1.93 percent, rising 100.52 points on the week.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 7679.47 points, up 198.14 or 2.65 percent, gaining 65.22 points since last weekend.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 28025 points, up 394 or 1.43 percent, but down 20 points on the week.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Australian shares rose 1.6 percent as higher copper and gold prices the previous day boosted miners like BHP Billiton, while investment firm Babcock and Brown jumped after raising its earnings forecast.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index ended 76.9 points higher at 5,053.7, down 47.2 points from a week ago.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South African stocks vaulted higher, lifted by recovering emerging markets and investors who sought bargains in battered stocks such as luxury goods group Richemont. The All-share index closed at 20696.16 points, up 669.78 or 3.34 percent, picking up 496.16 points during the week.
The All Gold index closed at 2798.71 points, up 49.46 or 1.80 percent, and rising 50.17 since last Friday. The Industrial index closed at 13898.83 points, up 434.88 or 3.23 percent, gaining 198.35 points over the week.
