imageKARACHI: Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar has been released on Wednesday after an anti-terrorism court (ATC) granted him bail in the last of the 39 cases against him.

According to private TV channels, Akhtar was released after submitting a surety of Rs500,000 and completing necessary paper work. The last case concerned the mayors alleged involvement in the treatment of terrorists at the former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussains hospital.

A large number of his Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) party supporters including senior leaders led by Dr Farooq Sattar had gathered outside the Central Jail Karachi to receive the imprisoned mayor of the city.

Akhtar is set to visit Quad-e-Azams mausoleum and Yadgar-e-Shuhada in Azizabad straight after his release.

Speaking to the media, the mayor had earlier said that he will write a book about time he spent in prison. "Time spent in the Karachi and Adiala jails were the worst in my life."

Last week, Akhtar was granted bail in the 38th case registered against him. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader, who was elected as Karachis 28th mayor by contesting the polls from jail for the first time in August, has been running his office from inside the jail ever since.
