Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, on Tuesday said that justice is a fundamental, inalienable and indestructible right of every citizen.
He said this while addressing the participants of a ceremony organized by the Saarc Law Pakistan (Islamabad chapter) in connection with the golden jubilee of Supreme Court of Pakistan here late Monday. The Chief Justice said that on the completion of 50 years of establishment of the Supreme Court it was decided to celebrate 2006 as its golden jubilee year with the theme 'Justice for all'.
"It embodies our resolve, commitment and belief that getting justice is a fundamental right of every citizen without any hindrance," the Chief Justice said. The Chief Justice said no one is above the law as it deals equally with every citizen.
He said conferences are being arranged in various cities in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court.
Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry stressed the need for more cooperation and sharing of experiences among Saarc countries, particularly in the field of law for the provision of justice to everyone. He stressed the need for adhering to the principle of peaceful coexistence in the comity of nations, as it is an age of interdependence.
The Chief Justice appreciated the contribution of Saarc Law Pakistan in this regard as well as for providing a forum for legal assistance.
Earlier, Chairman Saarc Law Pakistan, Muhammad Bilal briefly spoke about the background of establishment of Saarc Law Pakistan. He appreciated the efforts of the Chief Justice and the apex court to provide justice to the litigants rapidly and their role in minimising the pendency of cases.
Attorney General of Pakistan, Makhdoom Ali Khan and Vice Chairman of Saarc Law Pakistan, Justice Mushtaque Ahmed (Retd) also expressed their views.
