The Information Technology Ministry will automate Pakistan Railways processes with a view to providing online services to the corporate customers and passengers.
This was announced by IT Minister Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari following a meeting with Railway Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Tuesday. IT Secretary Farrakh Qayyum and PR Chairman Shakeel Durrani also attended the meeting, says a statement. Leghari said the IT Ministry had agreed to bear the cost to be incurred on the automation of various processes the Pakistan Railways.
"We are in the process of finalising a project that envisages automation of ticketing and freight/cargo system which will allow people to buy railway tickets through Internet and keep track of their freight or cargo consignments," he said.
Awais Leghari said the project, to be rolled out by January next year, would provide for an electronic office which would entirely replace the traditional mode of ticketing in a very quick time to save time, money and resources of the people intending to travel by railway.
He said the corporate customers would also benefit from this project by being able to keep a track of the movement of their consignments and cargo, saving them from the mental turmoil due to inordinate delays. Awais Leghari said the IT Ministry would also assist Pakistan Railways in setting up a call centre facility.-PR
