Punjab Chief Minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that government was taking all possible measures to provide educational facilities to special children as they possessed as much right on education as the normal children.
He was addressing a function regarding provision of buses to special children in various districts of Punjab, here on Tuesday. Provincial Minister for Special Education Qudsia Lodhi and Secretary Special Education, Sohail Masood were also present.
The CM said that education sector for special children was badly neglected in the past, which could be well judged from the fact that when the present government took over, the annual budget for special education was merely Rs 21,00,000. He said that now this budget had been enhanced to Rs 600 million per year due to which an increase of 140 percent has been witnessed in the number of special students. Announcing establishment of separate institutions for slow learners, the CM said that for proper mental training of special children separate educational facilities would be required for them. He said that in addition to 91 centres already established at tehsil level, special centres would be set up for such children in each of the 35 districts by June 2007.
He said that it would help implement government's decision to provide different syllabus and teaching facilities for special children suffering from various disabilities.
Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi announced that after the successful functioning of centres for special children at tehsil level, the government had decided to establish these institutions at town level and such institutions would be established in 20 towns in the first phase for which funds had already been allocated.
Earlier, the Chief Minister was informed that these buses had been equipped with an automatic and safe mechanism for boarding special children with wheelchairs into the buses.
