A mega railway project involving dualisation of 367-kilometre railway track from Lodhran to Raiwind will cost Rs 8.79 billion, said Project Director Anjum Pervez.
Talking to APP here on Tuesday, he said the project, being executed from country's own resources, would revolutionise railway service and the Up and Down trains would continue running without any wait for crossing from Karachi to Lahore. Train speed will also increase from 105-km to 140-km per hour, making the journey faster and more comfortable for travellers in accordance with future requirements.
He said work on the Lodhran- Khanewal section was nearing completion and was likely to be commissioned in early July next.
The cost of this 121-km portion is estimated at Rs 3.297 billion, work on which started in the year 2003. For the Khanewal-Sahiwal and Sahiwal-Raiwind sections, whose length is 119-km and 127-km respectively, a sum of Rs 5.49 billion will be spent on the total 246-km long track. Work on this section has started just recently and will be completed in 2009.
He said the cost of installing signals was not included in those estimates.
Pakistan Railways already has a double track from Karachi to Lodhran measuring 844 km, while Raiwind-Shahdra (Lahore) section is also double track.
The next track dualisation project being considered by the Railways authorities was from Lahore to Faisalabad, he said.
