The office-bearers of the Multan High Court Bar Association (MHCBA) have said that the police have failed to provide protection to them and a sense of insecurity is prevalent among the lawyer community for the last few days.
Addressing a joint press conference on Monday, MHCBA President Mehmood Ashraf Khan, secretary general Qari Ikramul Haq Qureshi said that the police in connivance with a rival party had kidnapped a client from the office of senior lawyer Mian Abbas.
In the second incident, the police forcibly entered the chamber of Sardar Sher Khan and tried to arrest an accused, but their attempt was foiled. The lawyers warned police would not be allowed to haunt justice seekers at lawyers' chambers or in the courtyard of the lower courts. They demanded the appointment of a special squad across the LHC Multan bench to stop occurrence of such incidents in the future.
Similarly, Layyah DSP Ghulam Mustafa Pahorr physically tortured lawyer Abdur Razzaq Rahi when he raised objections on the third degree torture. The lawyer was injured and rushed to a hospital where the police handcuffed him.
The Layyah bar has been protesting for the last two weeks but no action was taken. They demanded stern action against the DSP to prevent occurrence of such incidents in the future.
In the third incident, former MHCBA secretary general Sheikh Jamshed Hayat was attacked, but the police did not register a case against the accused.
They also demanded a judicial inquiry into the police excesses. MHCBA vice president Malik Umer Hamayun was also present.
