Punjab Food Department will continue its wheat procurement drive till the purchase of last grain of wheat from the farmers, and 2.5 million tons of wheat hopefully be procured by the department by June 15.
Punjab Food Director Muhammad Irfan Elahi told Business Recorder here on Tuesday that at present wheat stocks were lying with the middlemen and businessmen.
He said the Food Department would build a godown near Thokar Niaz Beg with capacity to store 50,000 tons of wheat, adding this godown which would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 100 million would help ensure proper storage facilities. He said the government was already constructing a godown with the capacity of 30,000 tons in Rawalpindi. This project would be accomplished at a cost of Rs 500 million by the end of current calendar year, he added.
He said the government was facing problems with regard to the storage of wheat and other items, as in most of the districts the wheat was lying in the open space. However, after the construction of godowns in Rawalpindi and Lahore, the storage problems would be resolved.
