The two-day National Hockey Trials began at the Hockey Club of Pakistan (HCP) Stadium on here Thursday. The trials are being held to select an 18-member Pakistan hockey team to compete in the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament.
The tournament is to be held at the National Hockey Stadium in Kuala Lumpur from June 18. On the opening day, three 40-minute trial sessions were staged with various combinations formed from the ongoing National Hockey Camp.
The trials were witnessed by a four-member panel of selectors. Former Olympian Khalid Mehmood is the chairman od the selectors and comprise former Olympians Manzoorul Hasan, Hasan Sardar and Akhtarul Islam. Former Olympian Asif Bajwa is the camp commandant and another former Olympian Shahid Ali Khan has been inducted as a coach.
Prominent among those to watch the trials were former Olympians Islahuddin, and Jehangir Butt, international M. Ashraf and Mansoor H. Khan, president of Saudi-Pak Bank, a die-hard hockey enthusiast.
