imageKARACHI: The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has intensified efforts against the nuisance of gas theft in the Karachi city.

A spokesman for the utility, in a statement here on Thursday, said that the company's Surveillance and Monitoring team in coordination with Customers Relations Department (CRD), FIR Cell, and Security Departments along with SSGC Police raided a number of locations in Cattle Colony, Garden and Ali Muhammad Brohi Goth areas of the metropolis.

He said the team disconnected illegal direct supply of gas that amounts to millions of rupees. The team conducted a raid on a fat melting and illegal power generation unit located at Cattle Colony Road 9, where gas was being used directly by tapping on auxiliary distribution line.

One 25 KVA and two 5 KVA gas generators were being used for illegal power generation whereas 5 burners were connected illegally for fat melting.

The estimated volume per year came to around 1,800mcf which amounts to Rs. 1.4 million. Previous claim on this premise was approximately Rs. 300,000, it was stated.

Gas theft was also unearthed, on a tip off, by Surveillance and Monitoring team in Sherpao Colony. Accused Muzammil Hussain was using gas through direct tapping on disconnected service valve at 3 PSI pressure and was running producing bakery and Nimco items along with illegal power generation.

The estimated volume per year comes to around 3,132mcf which amounts to Rs. 2.5 million. Previous claim on this premise is approximately Rs. 450,000.

On the same day Surveillance and Monitoring Department dismantled an illegal connection in a bakery in Ali Muhammad Brohi Goth where gas was stolen at 3 PSI pressure through a tampered regulator. The estimated volume per year comes to around 4,704 mcf which amounts to Rs. 3.7 million.

The owner managed to escape just before the raid. SSGC Police are searching for the absconder.

Surveillance and Monitoring Department also raided a Pakwan Centre in Garden area where gas was used through disconnected service line. Estimated amount of gas claim is approx. Rs.100,000 per month. Previous claim on this premise is about Rs. 664,000.

Due to the gas theft the volume of Unaccounted For Gas (UFG) increased and impacted the company's financial bottom line.
