The President of High Court Bar Association, Rawalpindi, Sardar Shaukat Hayat has appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo moto action against the unlawful confinement of Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, former speaker of National Assembly.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he stressed that the former speaker National Assembly had done nothing wrong and there is no offence against him. His detention in the Adiyala Jail is illegal and unjustified. He told the press that government wanted Syed Yusuf to toe government line failing which a baseless case of providing employment to poor people was framed against him.
The president of the bar said that Yusuf Raza Gilani is being tortured in the jail. He is isolated from the world and only six persons can visit him and that too for half an hour only. Being A-class category prisoner he has to be facilitated accordingly. Instead, he added, the other jail companions are not allowed to meet him.
Moreover, in a mid-night raid last month under the supervision of IG police, his computer and desert cooler were seized. All this is done by the agencies, claimed bar president. They are putting pressure on him to side with the government. But Syed Yusuf is a man of principles and a true leader, he is fighting against all odds, he added.
He further told the press that Syed Yusuf was once cleared off from all courts as there was no allegation against him but later he was re-arrested by the government on false charges of employment.
Barrister Shahnawaz Noon told the press that Yusuf had written three books Yaad-e-Hayat, Chah-e-Yusuf, and Qaid-e-Tanhai during his imprisonment, which were preserved in the computer along with many other important documents. The computer is in the custody of jail staff, he said. They said that a delegation of advocates would also meet the Chief Justice very soon in this connection and would appeal to him to intervene.
