With its corporate profits climbing to an all times high, the Telecom sector has been branded as the biggest success story in Pakistan's recent economic era. Pakistan's total mainline and cellular subscriber base stood at 3.4% only in 2002. The country's teledensity has touched an astounding 13.67% during 2005, which is counted amongst the highest in the world.
The cellular market alone, boasting 6 mobile phone companies and a subscriber base of over 20 million, has grown by 181.6% from previous year. Adding to the sharp rise of 32% share in the country's total foreign direct investments of US $1,524 million, 183 licenses were issued to LDI, LL & WLL operators during 2005. At the same time, the 3G broadband and wireless CDMA technologies continue to enhance their share across the country.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY:
he IT Industry of Pakistan is turning out to be yet another exciting and dynamic sector of the country with its total exports projected at around US $75 million during 2005-06 and the annual turnover exceeding US $300 million.
The Government of Pakistan is taking various steps to enhance emergent information technology sector leading to a contribution of 3% to GDP in the coming 5 years.
