The Supreme Court has directed Pakistan Electronic Media Regulating Authority (Pemra) Chairman Iftikhar Rashid and CDA to immediately vacate the forcibly occupied plot measuring 2.5 acres in Rawal Town, Islamabad, and hand over its possession to the owners Majeed and his two brothers.
The three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar and Justice Saiyed Saeed Ashhad passed these orders here on Friday taking suo motu notice of a recent newspaper report regarding forcible occupation of the plot by 'influential people' with unlawful help of police force.
After hearing CDA Legal Advisor and IG Police Islamabad, Iftikhar Ahmad Chaudhary, the court found the newspaper report correct and expressed displeasure over the performance of police.
The Court directed IGP Islamabad to initiate an inquiry against SHO Shehzad Town police for his role in the forcible occupation the plot whose market value was stated to be about Rs 8 million.
The Court was informed that there was litigation between Iftikhar Rashid, a retired Secretary Communication and Inspector General Police and the owners, and the proceedings were pending in Lahore High Court.
The Court, ordering immediate vacation of plot by Iftikhar Rashid and CDA, said the pending case shall be decided independently and both parties were free to seek legal remedies in accordance with the law.
The bench also directed IGP to promote trust of the people in the police force and lauded the role of the press highlighting such issues in newspapers.
