A court in Islamabad on Saturday issued arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and her spouse Asif Ali Zardari for 'submitting false statements' to the Election Commission. The National Accountability Bureau had filed a case against Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari that they had filed false statement in 1996.
Judge Rafi-uz-Zaman of Islamabad District and Sessions Court issued arrest warrants in the absence of their absence. The court directed the Interior Ministry to contact Interpol for the arrest of Benazir Bhutto and her husband and that they must be produced in the court on July 3.
PPP senator Babar Awan described the court decision as politically motivated and said the local court has no powers to issue arrest warrant. He said Benazir Bhutto had gone out of the country with court's permission.
