More than half the population above the age of 30 is likely to suffer from hemorrhoids which becomes a large figure in Karachi only. This was disclosed by Assistant Professor and Consultant, Section of General Surgery, Department of Surgery at AKU Dr Tabish Chawla in a presentation here on June 1.
He said for years physicians and patients had been awaiting a surgical treatment for hemorrhoids that causes less pain and a shorter recovery period than the traditional procedures.
Aga Khan University Hospital has added the most modern treatment for hemorrhoids called the Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids (PPH) to its existing facilities.
Earlier, visiting Indian expert Dr Roysuneel V Patankar, Associate Professor and Consultant at the Institute of Special Surgery in Mumbai and is on a five-day visit to Pakistan to conduct training for the new surgical treatment, explicitly discussed the latest method of hemorrhoidectomy.
Dr Patankar discussed the benefits of the new method to patients, hospitals, surgeons and employers as well as the challenges and future of the Prolapse and Hemorrhoids.
The study's results from on going clinical trials in US show that patients who had undergone PPH suffered less over all adverse events and significantly less pain than reported in the traditional method.
A panel discussion followed the presentations. Panelists included Dr Khalid Hameed, Associate Professor and Head, Section of General Surgery and Dr Rizwan Azami, Associate Professor and Consultant, Section of General Surgery, Department of Surgery.
