Speakers at a meeting of Shura Hamdard Karachi Chapter have asked the government to allocate enough amount in national budget to establish Central Bureau of Translation on large scale to give priority to education particularly to primary education.
They also called for imparting primary education free and in Urdu language. The meeting was based on, "National Education Policy" and presided over by the Chief Justice of Federal Shariat Court, Justice Haziqul Khairi, at a local hotel. Mrs Sadia Rashid, President Hamdard Foundation Pakistan, was also present at the meeting.
Professor Dr Syed Irtefaq Ali, former Vice Chancellor (VC), University of Karachi highlighted the deteriorating condition of education in the country. He said there were 3,28,629 schools in the country and out of these 17 per cent had no roof, 39 percent were lack of drinking water, 62 percent of electricity, 50 percent of toilet facilities and 46 percent of boundary walls.
There were 30,000 of ghost schools, 40 percent children did not go to schools. There was dropout of 45 percent. Poor were not able to educate his children because of the high fees of private schools. Former VC, Hamdard University, Dr Manzoor Ahmed said that there were much confusion in our minds regarding English education that it would take Muslims away from their very national purposes.
These confusions rendered Muslims great damages, he said, adding that Allama Iqbal was the product of English education and Sir Syed had tried to implement his reforms under the influence of English education.
He said that our universities should be research oriented and all education from primary to higher education be uniformed and funded on broad-based knowledge. He was critical of centralisation of education and emphasised that bureaucratisation of education should be abolished forthwith. Justice Haziqul Khairi said that Muslim countries should cooperate with each other in education field, education system be decentralised and controlled at district level.
Major General (Retd) Ghulam Umar said that Islam laid great emphasis on education. Since Pakistan is an Islamic country, education must be given here free of cost.
"National Language is always a pillar of any society through which a nation makes progress.
Engineer Anwarul Haq Siddiqui said that population growth rate was declared problem number one in Bangladesh and China. We must make a determined initiative through Population Education to control its growth in the country". In this connection all teachers must be trained on population education.
"Student will need four essential areas in the curriculum to make the education relevant, purposeful and useful in their subsequent life and the areas are 1) Basic skills 2) Life experience 3) Character education and 4) Work education, " he said.
