After calm down of the bird flu (H5N1) rumours, chicken rates suddenly raised in the ancient city of Multan and adjacent areas. People noted that chicken was being sold at Rs 50 per kilogram a week ago but now the rate had jumped up to Rs 95 to 100, while eggs price soared to Rs 30 per dozen.
A spokesman of poultry association told that there would be no bird in the market in next two months because poulterers did not add more bird in the farms, because they had already suffered a huge loss.
They said that business of Shaver chicken also saw an impetus. The lower middle class now feels difficult to eat chicken due to its price hike. On the other hand, shopkeepers said that most of the poultry farms were closed and a great number of chickens were culled after the bird flu hit Pakistan but now its demand had increased. They expressed fear that prices of both chicken and eggs would further rise in the coming days.
