The latest WhatsApp video-calling scam
Earlier this week, WhatsApp had launched its highly awaited video calling feature across all Phone platforms, after only testing it for months before introducing it for commercial use. As word of the new feature rolled out, many users reportedly started receiving and sharing an unverified link on Whatsapp; in the guise of an activation link for Whatsapp video calling.
The invite link since then has gone viral on Whatsapp, but as it turned out the link is fake and could potentially expose your smart-phone to malicious attacks.
WhatsApp had introduced an invite system last year when it had debuted its voice calling in different tiers to all its users; now it seems that con artists used the same strategy by using a fake invite link to trick users to go down the same route with its new video calling feature. However, WhatsApp had automatically enabled its new video calling feature through its software update.
Clicking on the fake link, leads the user to another page that would ask you to invite more of your friends on WhatsApp thus furthering the chain of being duped and also leads you to a site that aesthetically rips of WhatsApp making it seem authentic and genuine. All the while also mentioning a WhatsApp video calling group, which does not officially exist; It is strongly advised not to click on the bait link as it could phish out your private details and user data while exposing your smartphone to deceptive domains and malicious files.
