City District Government of Rawalpindi seems least bothered to promote sports in the area and has not allocated even a single penny for this sector.
"Mini Sports Complex at Liaquat Bagh is only place for people of the city where they can take part in healthy sports activities, but due to negligent attitude of the government it is unable to serve the people", said Tehsil Sports Officer (TSO) and in-charge of Mini Sport Complex Shahid Khan here on Wednesday while talking to Business Recorder.
"We have not received funds from Punjab Sports Board since 1996 and are providing sports and recreational facilities to youth on self-help basis", Shahid Khan said adding that actually almost 100 members of sports complex pay a nominal fee of Rs 250 per month, which help pay the utility bills and minor maintenance expenditure.
He observed that the town municipal administration was collecting rent of shops of sports complex and it was bound to pay 60 percent of the amount to Sports Complex, but not a single penny was paid so far.
He said that six squash courts with modern amenities are under construction with the help of Pakistan Squash Federation in the complex, out of which four would be utilised by male and one each would be reserved for international events and women.
He said that the Sports Complex offers the practice facility to the players in disciplines including badminton, table tennis and karate.
