There is no letup in heat and sizzling heat persisted in southern Punjab. At least 31 people including one minor child and four women have died and 155 fainted of heat stroke in Punjab province during last 24 hours till Wednesday 0200 pm as the temperature in southern Punjab rose to 45 degree celsius and power load shedding added to the miseries of the people.
More than 60 demonstrations were staged in towns and cities of southern Punjab on Sunday and Monday as protest against the load shedding of 6 to 12 hours. Mepco authorities failed to restore the electricity in Nawabpur in spite of elapsing four days where at least 100 houses electronics goods like refrigerators, water pumps, electrical fans and other things burnt when a 11-KV live wire fell on the local supply line on Friday.
Health authorities told in Multan that at least 31 persons have died of heat stroke and suffocation in Bahawalpur, Jehanian, Sahiwal, Janpur, Kotla Moosa Khan, Shujabad, Yazman, Chowk Sarwar Shaheed, Zahir Pir, Dera Bukkha, Multan, Rahimyar Khan during last 24 hours, however no patient died of gastro-enteritis during last five days.
EDO (Health) Dr Abdul Hameed Chughtai said, "total 31 people have so far died during last 24 hours in south Punjab due to heat stroke and suffocation. Of them five died in Rahimyar Khan, three each in Bahawalpur, Dera Bukkha, and Zahir Pir, four each in Yazman and Sahiwal, two in Jehanian, one each in Janpur, Kotla Moosa Khan, Kassowal, Shujabad, and Chowk Sarwar Shaheed."
He said that other casualties were not in his jurisdiction. Demonstrations were staged in Kehror Pucca, Duniyapur, Lodhran, Multan, Nawabpur, Bosan Sala Wahan, Sikandarabad, Makhdoom Rasheed, Makhdoompur Pahuran, Abdul Hakim,Jehanian, Chishtian, Chiniot, Pir Mahal, Syed Wala and other towns The victims said that they have been facing severe hardships due to non-availability of drinking water in the absence of electricity and their cattle heads are also dying.
