About 80 percent of Ukraine's 2006 sugar beet crop is in good or satisfactory condition, but average root weight is lower than in 2005, the Ukrtsukor sugar association was quoted as saying on Thursday.
Interface Ukraine news agency quoted an official, as saying average root weight was 41 grams as of July 1 compared with 43 grams a year.
Ukrtsukor said Ukraine's beet fields had 87,000 beets per hectare, the same level as in 2005. Ukraine's State Statistics Committee says the country sowed 821,100 hectares to beat in 2006, 21.8 percent more than in 2005.
Ukrtsukor has said the country may harvest 20 to 21 million tonnes of sugar beet in 2006 and increase output to 2.0-2.5 million tonnes after a rise in sown area and favourable weather.
Ukraine, which consumes about 2.0 million tonnes of white sugar per season, produced about 1.9 million tonnes in 2005.
