Two occupation policemen have been arrested in Indian occupied Kashmir over the weekend for the gunning down of a musician that sparked a wave of protest in the occupied Srinagar, police said on Thursday. "We have arrested two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in connection with the killing," a police officer told AFP.
The CRPF says it opened fire at music composer Inayatullah Bhat late Friday near his home in occupied Srinagar, when he ignored calls to halt. "Our jawans (men) fired at him thinking he was a fidayeen (a suicide bomber) as he ignored calls to stop," the police spokesman said. The arrests came as occupied Kashmir's authorities set up a committee to implement recommendations of the state's human rights commission.
"We have decided to form a cabinet sub-committee to implement recommendations of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC)," the occupied Srinagar's Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters in occupied Srinagar. Formed nearly a decade ago, the SHRC can only censure and recommend action against the people guilty of human rights violations and cannot punish the guilty on its own.
"The formation of the committee should make it clear that we want minimal, in fact zero human rights violations," Azad said, referring to repeated claims by rights groups of violations by security forces in the state.
