Heavy rains lashed major parts of lower Sindh on Thursday evening, disrupting power supply to Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Sanghar and Tharparkar districts from Grid Station Mirpurkhas and inundating low-lying areas with almost knee-deep water.
Report said the rainfall accompanied by gusty winds started at 6:30pm and continued intermittently as a result of which low-lying areas were inundated under knee-deep rain water. Main roads and streets were also submerged in the rainwater.
Power supply from Grid Station Mirpurkhas disrupted with the start of rain and all areas of Mirpurkhas, Umerkot and Tharparkar districts plunged into darkness.
Business activities were suspended while traffic was also missing from the roads. Water supply from the supply schemes to towns and cities was also disrupted due to power failure.
District governments have declared an emergency and municipal staff was cautioned to face an expected flood condition.
Power supply could not be restored till filing of this report. Further reports said rainfall also occurred at Nirwah, Shadipalli, Digri, Jhuddo, Naokot, Kunri, Tandojan Muhammad, Sofi, Dhoro Naro, Pithoro, Samaroq, Umerkot, Khipro, Phuladiyoon, Hingorno, Sindhri, Kandiyaro, Jhole, Sanghar, Tando Adam, Shahpurchakar, Khahi, etc.
City nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, declaring emergency in works and services, health, fire brigade and other concerned departments in view of expected monsoon rains, has cancelled leaves of all staff and called them to duty.
He announced this while chairing a meeting here to review arrangements made by the city government to cope with any eventuality during rains.
