Veteran journalist and Editor-in-Chief of daily Nawa-e-Waqt Majid Nizami has said that holding of free and fair elections are inevitable to save the country's future and put the political system at right track.
While addressing the members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) here on Saturday, Majid Nizami said all the political parties and their leaders should be allowed to contest the next general elections.
"We should wage struggle to make the country in accordance with the ideas of Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal, which is only possible with the strengthening of ideology of Pakistan", he said, adding that after Quaid-e-Azam we faced a political intrigue as a result of which dictators entered into power corridors in gross violation of teachings of Quaid-e-Azam.
He called for keeping the dictators away from the power corridors. He added that dictators used to impose martial law in the country under the law of necessity, which must be abrogated now so as to strengthen democracy in the country.
He said that independence of judiciary is a must to provide justice to aggrieved people. Referring to recent decision of Supreme Court in Steel Mills case, he said this decision shows that judiciary wants to improve its image in the eyes of people of Pakistan but to achieve this goal they need to give more such decisions, he added.
He said that General Pervez Musharraf in a recent statement admitted his weakness. He claimed that Musharraf is encircled by a few persons who are not allowing him to move in a right direction. He said that neither any law nor constitution of Pakistan authorises General Musharraf to remain in power but he wants to remain in power for next ten years or more. Advising General Musharraf to quit the office of President, he said that generals should use their energies to perform their professional obligations. He advised the lawyers to wage struggle to strengthen democracy in the country.
Criticising the government, Nizami said that its internal and external policies have badly failed. He was of the view that all out efforts are being made to strengthen relations with India ignoring all the diplomatic norms. India never accepted the existence of Pakistan and always talked about greater India, he said.
He added that America wants to attack Iran but finding it difficult. Expressing concern over deteriorating law and order situation in the country, he said it is basic obligation of the government to ensure protection of life and property of its citizens. President SCBA Malik Muhammad Qayyum and President LHCBA Israul Haq Mian also spoke on the occasion.
