Twenty four people were killed and eight injured when the bus they were travelling in plunged into a gorge in northern India, police said Saturday. "The toll has gone up to 24. All the bodies have been recovered. The rescue work has been completed," local police chief Anurag Chauhan told AFP.
The bus rolled down a 100-metre (328-foot) deep gorge and fell into Bhagirathi river in northern Uttaranchal state, after the driver failed to negotiate a sharp turn, police said.
Four of the injured were in serious condition. The bus was travelling to the holy Gangotri shrine which is dedicated to the Ganges river, considered sacred by Hindus. Accidents are common in hilly areas of India and are often caused by rash driving.
