Singapore shipbuilder Labroy Marine will build 24 specialised vessels that support offshore oil exploration within the next two years, and plans to take another 12 orders for delivery in 2009.
Labroy, whose regular customers for offshore support vessels are in the United States, Europe and the Middle East, also expects a wave of new orders from India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Russia, a senior executive said on Friday.
"Despite the surge in new orders the demand for new offshore support vessels is still there. We don't see any signs of a slowing down as yet," Toh Ho Tay, Labroy's director for shipbuilding, told Reuters in an interview.
"My yard is fully booked till 2008 and I am now selling space for 2009." Offshore vessels form about half of Labroy's order book of S$1.25 billion ($791 million). The company won its first order to build two offshore jack-up drilling rigs worth $292 million in March and is expanding its yard on the Indonesian island of Batam, a 30-minute boat ride from Singapore.
