Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Tariq Hamid has said that transmission of electric power is being strengthened and a sum of Rs 19.6 billion will be spent during the current fiscal year for the purpose.
He was addressing a delegation of Command and Staff College Quetta, here at Wapda House on Monday.
While briefing the delegation about the projects of water and power sectors, Tariq told the delegation that some 13,000 villages were provided with electricity during the last fiscal year while 15,000 more villages would be energised in the current fiscal year.
He hoped that all the villages, as per commitment of the Government, would be electrified by December 2007. He also apprised the delegation that per capita water availability in Pakistan had decreased to an alarming position while the electricity load had gone up by 10 percent owing to economic and industrial growth.
He said that the construction of more than one mega dam was inevitable to sustain agriculture and economic growth in the country.
The Chairman informed the delegation that the work on detailed engineering designs of Diamer-Basha was in full swing while the National Highway Authority had already taken up the work to upgrade Karakaram Highway.
The contract for a new bridge over the river Indus at Thakot had been awarded and the construction work would soon commence, he added.
Member Finance Imtiaz Anjum, Member Power Muhammad Anwer Khalid and senior managers of Water and Power Wings were also present on the occasion.
