Close-circuit cameras to be installed in the city by Rawalpindi police to eradicate crimes like car lifting, dacoity, purse snatching and traffic violations.
This was stated by Syed Marwat Ali Shah, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Rawalpindi Range, here on Wednesday while talking to business leaders of Rawalpindi division during his visit to Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI).
Terming increasing flow of beggars in the city a big problem, the DIG said that without proper legislation for eradication of beggary, police is helpless to take measures against this menace.
"Police arrest a beggar but under existing law there is no punishment for them. Joint efforts of government and society were necessary to fight against the beggary. We must join hands to discourage the beggars at every crossing and big markets, he said.
Marwat said that Rawalpindi police with the financial support of USAID would install close circuit televisions in the city to stop the crimes like car lifting, dacoity, purse snatching and other traffic violations. The televisions would help indicate the criminals and help decrease the crime rate, he added.
About the car parking problem in the city, the DIG said that a committee has been constituted to address this problem.
The committee headed by District Police Officer includes SP Traffic and representatives of Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA).
The committee, he said, would submit its recommendations to DIG for resolution of the problem.
Jalil Ahmed Malik, President RCCI said that the traffic problem and issue of parking is worsening day in and day out and no positive efforts are visible to address these issues.
He stressed the need for a crackdown against beggars while immediate measures to maintain law and order and stop car lifting, dacoities and other crimes.
